For 2016–17, the North Carolina Testing Program selected a representative sample of schools with a target population of 169 schools (approximately 15,023 students) for Mathematics (grade 5) and 111 schools (approximately 15,915 students) for English Language Arts/Reading (grade 6). The sample reflects statewide student demographics related to region, ethnicity, gender, and economically disadvantaged students and one school-level achievement variable of mean-scale score to ensure the sample selected is representative of the state. In addition, volunteers were allowed to participate.

State Item Reports
Below are the state item reports for the Proof of Concept Study Interims 1, 2, and 3. Please note that comparing district level results to state level results is not particularly meaningful. Different schools and classes may be at different places in covering the content based on the testing windows and their calendars. The purpose of the interims is to provide individual and classroom level formative feedback. Comparisons to other classrooms, schools, or local education agencies (LEAs) is neither encouraged, nor advised. The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is providing the state level report for general information purposes only. It would be a misinterpretation for an LEA to conclude that their students performed better or worse than another LEA or the state. The value in the interim results is for teachers to determine if their students have learned the content standards that were covered in their classroom prior to the interim assessment.

The sample reflects statewide student demographics related to ethnicity, gender, previous mean scale score on state tests, and geographic location. The NCDPI pulled the smallest sample possible to reduce impact on schools.
